What you’ll learn

Master the essential skills and knowledge required to become a certified DOT Breath Alcohol Technician and Certified Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technician (C-LOCT), including:

Curriculum

The first part of the course takes approximately 1 hour to complete. There are 7 initial lessons, each containing a video and a short quiz, followed by an assessment test. The final lesson is the Certified Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technician training (C-LOCT) and a 22 question test. The second part of the course is the proficiency demonstration (mock collections) which takes 90 minutes to complete.

Understanding Alcohol and Testing Regulations โ€“ 7 minutes

Who can become a certified DOT breath alcohol technician?

To qualify for training as a certified specimen collector for DOT drug testing, you must first meet the minimum qualifications set by the Department of Transportation:

  • You need to be at least 21 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have a clean criminal record
  • Be able to communicate and understand instructions in English

What is the difference between a breath alcohol technician (BAT) and a screen test technician (STT)?

A Screening Test (This can be performed by either a BAT or STT) โ€“ When employees come in for testing, they give a breath or saliva sample to show they havenโ€™t been drinking. This first test is called a screening. If they pass the screening test and prove theyโ€™re sober, then the employee is good to go. If they fail the test, they must move on to the next step.

Step 2: A Confirmation Testย  (This can only be performed by a BAT)If the employee fails the breath or saliva test, then the DOT requires a confirmation test to be administered after 15 but no later than 30 minutes after the first test. The second test is necessary to prove the accuracy of the firstย 

What is a C-LOCT?

A Certified Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technician (C-LOCT) is a certification provided by Lifeloc which demonstates that you are able to perform calibration and calibration checks on Lifeloc EBT devices.

What are the certification renewal requirements for breath alcohol technicians?

You must also undergo refresher training every five years to maintain your DOT breath alcohol technician certification. The renewal training and the initial training are generally the same training.

However, the DOT expects you to stay current with regulations and testing procedure changes between your courses instead of waiting for your refresher course.

What are the steps to take when becoming a certified DOT breath alcohol technician?

Enroll in an accredited DOT breath alcohol technician certification course

Once enrolled:

  • Complete a qualification training program
  • Pass a monitored proficiency demonstration
  • Obtain your training certificate

How long is breath alcohol technician certification good for?

Certified DOT breath alcohol technicians are certified for 5 years from the original certification date. To remain certified, an individual must retake a certification course.

What is included in the drug testing certification training?

There are 7 lessons, each containing a video and a short quiz, totally approximately 1 hour. This is followed by an assessment quiz and a proficiency demonstration (mock collections).

How long is the breath alcohol technician training course?

There are 7 video modules equaling approximately 52 minutes. Each video is accompanied by a short quiz. The course also contains a 35-question assessmnet quiz. Finally, the proficiency demonstration (mock collections) takes roughly 90 minutes to complete.

Can I stop and start the training as needed?

Yes. The course and all its content is available at any time. When you pause your training, the course will keep track of where you left off. Even after completion, you can go back and review the material.

Can I review the material multiple times?

Yes. Your training is valid for one year. All of the material including video modules and documents can be reviewed as much as needed.

When will I get my training certificate?

Your training certificate will be available to download once we receive the completed ATFs from the mock collections. It can be found in your training portal.
